  1. Frosty that's an idea I would have never thought of on my own. I was thinking there were only two options being, welding or tongs. Up till Little Blacksmith made me a set of tongs I had avoided even the thought of making them yet alone using them. My only problem in thought was; big piece of steel and no welder.

  2. I have a hammer, an aso, a fire, and what else am I forgetting? Ohh wait I don't have the steel or tongs. As much as I would love to right now I am on the hunt for steel... without a car to get me looking at scrap piles all across the Mid-West! This weekend I'll stop by Tractor Supply Co. and pick up some more coal and material to forge the tongs. Then after that I just need to acquire the 2x2 stock and then I'm ready to pound a piece of steel for 5 hours straight.

And man I am totally ready to put this theory into action, but time, school, and other things seem to have other ideas.

  3. Charles: I did think about upsetting the stock before, I just didn't think about it when I posted. And your theory on the anvil mushrooming out over time is probably a fair assumption and something I failed to think about.

TP: I do like the design of your stump anvil, how much do you think it weighs?

LB: Maybe I will have to take the beginners class with Elmo over the winter. Then maybe we could work together when you come up next summer.

  4. I have tried contacting Elmo on a few occasions by email and by phone without any reply. I did look at his classes but as of now my first priority is to buy a truck and not spend us$350 on a class quite yet. But it would be interesting to get into his shop sometime most likely in a class eventually.

So on the anvil, I was thinking, what if I found a piece of 4x4 square stock and just tapered the end down to a 1x1. the only thing then that I wouldn't be able to do is weld a face to the anvil. And as of now I am not too worried about having a bick on such a small anvil. I wouldn't have the experience to do that either.

  5. As of late I have been really interested in "Viking" age life and tools. As a part of this I have decided to convert all my traditional hand woodworking tools to viking age equivalents. I wanted to start to do this by forging these tools in a age appropriate way and since I am newer to smithin' I do not have many tools for that either so I thought I would make the tools for blacksmithing first. But the first thing I need to forge I don't have the proper tools make, and that is the stump anvil.

I wonder if anyone here knows where I could buy one or anyone that has a power hammer that I could contact for a commission?

Here are some pictures off the web to give you an idea:

  6. When I built mine I had a problem especially in the start with clinkers forming from the sand in the mix melting into a crude glass, the problem finally started going away a few fires ago. Is there a way to prevent this on my next build or is this a problem that I will have to deal with. My only solution is to just add less sand but I have sand as an abundance so that is something I would like not to have to do.

"period blacksmiths", but only if they were really, really specific about what period (and what place) they were supposed to be emulating.

I actually just hopped on today to start a topic on making viking period tools in a period authentic manner. I'm not sure if I will post today but, you never know^_^.

  8. I know some times I make myself look ignorant and make a fool of myself idk. You know I am completely sorry if I had missed the whole point and caused you the frustration of "Can't this guy get it". I don't mean any harm, I guess I think I need to sit back and stay away from the computer for a bit before I say anything stupid.

Please do not think we are bashing the creator of the video

I know you weren't really I should have used a different word but as I have been known to not be good at choosing the right words. But even if you were bashing on him I would never get worked up over anything like that, trust me.

The IForgeIron membership is encouraged to step up and post any time they see a safety problem or hazardous situation. It keeps us alive and able to enjoy life

I also get this as well you know, I mean if I caused someone to get hurt by repeating my actions I would feel really bad and wish that someone would have said something.

  10. Lol this is kinda funny I have a video that relates to this as well. (If only I knew how to embed videos into post)

Even though you guys were bashing this guy on his safety and such he did make a video on shop noise and some of the dB s of certain tools.

Mod Note. Link removed due to language.

But then again he did do some thing stupid, I wonder if you will pick it up.

*Edit: In this one he uses the phone app as well as a real dB meter

  11. Well as I say its his brain and if he wastes it, well its his own causing.

*I believe he has a "professional" shop which most likely has ventilation of some sort. He also always has the garage door open when ever he is burning something in any other videos*
