Try either dilute sulphuric acid, or a hot solution of alum.

How come I can't see most of the book?
I know this is an old message, but the answer is because you're not in the USA. I'm in the UK, and I don't see the download button either. I don't know which countries get the download. The solution is to use a proxy server .
Edit: I see from a later post that you got an explanation from Google. Teach me to read to the end of the thread before posting . The proxy server advice stands, though.

Damasceneing by inlaying non-ferrous metals into iron/steel that has been cross hatched with a chisel or graver is still done in Toledo Spain. Any good jewelry book should cover it.
May I suggest ILL'ing a copy of "Metal Techniques for Craftsmen" by Oppi Utrecht (sp?).
Oppi Untracht, though it's not cheap . Guess the library makes sense.

A propane torch is suitable for silversmithing; both for annealing and soldering. Here in the UK, it's what plumbers typically use: a 4.7kg propane tank + torch. e.g. PMPX Professional Torch Kit
Don't know much about MAPP gas, but I've always been told it's expensive.
