  1. I couldn't make the anvil type out from the vantage point that the tour gave us.  I spent waaay longer than anyone else in my group cared too looking at this room.

Also, you are correct George, that is the forge in the far corner.  They had hammer clinking sounds playing over a speaker to imitate work going on.  There were a few sets of tongs hanging on the wall behind the anvil.

  2. Went on a family vacation to Alabama last week, and got to tour the battleship USS Alabama.  It was amazing, and I could have spent an entire week there, just looking around at the engineering and construction marvels around every corner.  Around one corner though, we found the ship's blacksmith shop.  I had no idea that we were going to stumble across a blacksmith's setup that has floated around the world, and through numerous large battles.  It makes sense after thinking about it, but never would have guessed I was going to see an anvil and forge on that tour.

There was also 2 impressive machine shops on board, with enough equipment to perform some pretty massive repairs.  It was a very cool tour, and I highly recommend it.  My kids loved it as well.

  3. Dang, yeah, sorry to hear about your seizure.  Growing up, my neighbor had similar issues, and I remember him telling me he always felt like he had been beaten up in a fight after his seizures.  I hope you can take it easy for a day or so.

Great looking tree too MJ!  Looks like that eye probably doesn't feel too great though! Seems like a lot of people on here are having a round end of the year.

  4. First blacksmithing project that my 7 year old son has helped with.  He was able to do most of the hammer swinging, while i held the tongs.  It was exciting to see him so exciting to get to do some smithing! It is a clothes pin that we will use to hold washcloths on our fire iron cook set that I made a few months back.  just stick the corner of the cloth through the loop, and pull it down into the pinch point.

  5. Thanks DHarris, I have a brace/stand that I made from angle iron that can be used in a vise.  It helps when doing detail work with punches or chisels.

Below are the shaping tools I used.  First punch was for general shaping, second chisel was for lines feet etc, third is for eye pupils, fourth one is for eye iris, far right one was used to make the facial recesses for eyes.
