Okay, The blade is going to be a Greek leaf style design made of wootz and is going to be a little longer than a usual one handed sword (still working on the exact length).
The hilt will be a hand and a half in length and a cheap red gem for the pommel (in the gem will be a weight for balance), I want it to be a war sword so my question real depends on which kind of material is best for making a hilt.
My question includes everything except the blade.

I have been designing a sword for a while now and I've gotten stuck on this Question, what type of metal should I use to make the hilt of my sword?
I want it to be strong but not so strong I can't work with it considering I
have limited resources.

I have just started blacksmithing and mostly use files to make knifes, but what is the best material to use? I will enjoy your feedback.

Usually I make mine out of a half a horseshoe.

Gonna have to grind at my friends house seeing I don't have a grinder.

I can't seem to find a good anvil; I did get a cast iron one but I found out it doesn't work so well. Is there still places that sell quality anvils?
If so where can I find them?
