So I'm nearly finished with my forge (up reading from a brake drum forge) and I was wondering what I need in terms of stove pipe. Ive already got two pieces of galvanized stove pipe, but I'm concerned about the galvanized with the heat of the forge. Should I get some black stove pipe? And if so how much of the chimney should be black stove pipe vs galvanized assuming the chimney will be 10 ft tall?

I would think it would work

Huh, that's pretty cool

That's the plan, hopefully I can find one of his old hammers or some tongs. I'd love to be able to use some of his tools

Unfortunately his anvil was sold a while back, but while my Dad was back home visiting the farm he did find this book, published in 1918. I already know most of the stuff that it covers, but it is really cool. Hopefully I can get back to the farm and see if any of his other old blacksmithing stuff is still there
It's kind of fun reading through this thing, times certainly have changed quite a bit -
Hi I've recently began to get into blacksmithing. Anyways there's a craft fair in my town that I'm going to get a table at. I figure I'll make small things like plant hangers and hooks, but I was wondering if anyone else might be able to give me some advice as to what normally sells at craft fairs. I figure that I'll keep my products under $20, so I'm just looking for small things that wouldn't be too hard to make.

I think I'll just dress one of the sides for now and see how it works out. I'll make sure to be carefull not to chip the edges any more than they are

I've heard of people 'dressing' their anvils, is this something I should do to this anvil, an if so how should I go about it?

That's what I had thought

So I just realized its only a 60#, which means I did over pay for it, but it should work well as my first anvil

Just picked it up, it's an old Vulcan in good condition I'll get some pictures up once I get home

Alright thank you guys so much I really appreciate all of the advice. If I get it ill try and get some pictures up

So tomorrow I'm going to look at an 80# English anvil. The guy I talked to said it was in good condition and is asking for $150. Im planning on checking the rebound and ring of the anvil but I was wondering if I could get some tips on other things to check for; markings, things like that. The price of $150 sounds fair for an 80# anvil assuming its in good condition. Any thoughts or advice?

Hello, I'm 17 years old and just started blacksmithing, currently I have a drumbrake forge powered by my girlfriend's old hair dryer and a sledgehammer head anvil that's sunk into a stump. I just wanted to introduce myself and try to find other blacksmiths in my area that might be able to help me out with finding an anvil and a source of coal.
