Hello, I am going to look at an anvil tomorrow. Not very familiar with these.

Although I haven't seen it yet, it is marked: NOHAB 23 (raised) Sweden

Condition is suposedly very good to excellent. Not sure of the weight. Can anyone give me their opinions as to the quality and what does the "23" mean, if anything? Thanks

I apologize if this is not the correct forum for this. I purchased a 35 pound sledge hammer this weekend. I never saw anything like this......just looking at it makes one's arms hurt just thinking about swinging it, really.

Has anyone ever seen a sledge as big as this? Would anyone have any suggestions on what this monster would have been used for? The elderly fella I bought it from said he bought it at an auction many years ago. The auction was selling off many items from a lumber company that closed up. I suppose I could assume that it was used in the lumber industry........but for what.......who could swing it?

The sledge head appears to be forged without any markings of any kind but shows signs of age with very little use (that figures....). It is old, the handle appears original as has the craftmanship of yesteryear....a flared round collar and the proper wedge in the end of the handle (looks like ash or hickory) to keep the head in place. At this point, I am not able to provide any pictures.

I have a chance to purchase a Fulton anvil, appx 130-150 pounds. It looks to be in excellent shape. Before I buy it, I was trying to do a little research on it but found mostly no information. I do not have Mr. Postman's book...probably should get one though. Can anyone share their thoughts on these anvils. I have a strong facination with anvils......like most of us, huh?

Thank you also for the info. THe anvil is located in Central PA and is in the back of a dark dingy garage although I was able to look at it up close with the available lighting and a flashlight. It is in very good shape, edges sharp and crisp, horn clean, overall very good to excellent shape. I could not see any other markings but could not really flip the anvil around for complete inspection. The seller bought it at a farm auction and just wanted to flip it for a profit. I don't mind paying a fair price. Not that it matters, someone told me he paid $200 for it. I couldn't care if he paid $1 for it, just want to pay a fair price. Thanks again for the info and I will search the archives like you suggest.

Can anyone give me an idea of a fair value would be for A 250 lb (appx) Vulcan anvil run? I know that sometimes value is what I'm willing to pay but I never ran across a Vulcan. It's in fairly good shape but I couldn't seem to find any markings on it anywhere other than the typical logo. I have a 188 lb Wright and this anvil looks to be 50 lbs more. Any info on Vulcans is welcome. The seller wants $550. I don't mind shelling out $ for nice anvils but I thought this may be a little too high. Thanks

I am looking at a Fisher anvil that's due to come up at auction soon. I am trying to determine a fair value for this monster. I have a few anvils in the 200 pound range and this one would dwarf those. On inspection, I know it's a Fisher from the obvious foot marking but I was not able to see the # marked on the one foot.....but I could feel the #....it was a 4 or a 5. The condition is overall very good but the table is missing a sliver of it's top, almost like someone filleted 1/2 inch off the complete table except about 3" on the hardy hole end. I know this kills the condition but everything else is very good. As is, I know the table issue may kill the value from it's usefulness. Can the table be easily repaired? I would appreciate any value and repair advice. Thank you!
