oh, and these have the choke wide open. I realize I didn't open incrementally, but instead wanted to focus on what burner would behave like with no choke.

I really appreciate the replies, and regret not responding before. I'm still working out the kinks.

I have read enough to know there's no sense adding a blower to naturally aspirated burner. ;-) Oh, and the tip is 0.035 tip with 3/4" x 8" pipe.

This is running about 10 psi (though I've gone up to 12-15 without huge change except the amount of flames coming out of front, which is why I had tried blocking the opening w/firebrick).

this sputtering starts to happen after forge is up and running for a while (maybe 5 min+). could it be partly from the paint burning off front? :-/

I have a choke that I added because I couldn't keep the burner lit (out of the forge) wide open. the choke is closed about 3/4, but when I open it up, it sputters. this may be because of the low psi though.

forgot to mention, it's self-assembled, from zoeller kit.

ok, here's some quick footage of my first atmospheric forge/burner. I have work yet to do on the forge body, and from what I've read, and the large amount of dragon's breath, I believe I need to reduce the front opening some. I haven't run the forge for more than 5-10 min total yet and the highest PSI I've messed with is <10.

well, the parts arrived from Zoeller on Wednesday... it's driving me mad I haven't been able to start work on it yet, but patience is something I'm striving to learn. :-)

anyway, the one thing I was having trouble with is finding pipe sealant. I went to the local AirGas to try to get it, but they didn't really have anything suitable. they referred me to a boiler supply place down the street. I went over there and they don't really carry supplies to sell, but gave me part of a can of blue monster. anyone have any experience with this? is it ok?

I'm studying sculpture at the local University, and while they don't have a welding program, I am in "Metal Fabrication" which touches on the basics of most things in the metal shop. I have done a bit of mig and OA, but haven't tried the stick at all. after reading these threads and seeing some ok priced tombstones in local CL, now I gotta learn! However, I have no garage, am using carport as workspace. The dryer outlet would require a LONG cord (probably 20'+), so maybe I should focus more on OA since my dad has a rig I can use at his home, across town.

yes, I have been looking & ordered parts for the zoeller simple gas forge. :-) but neither local Home Depot nor Lowe's sell the metal paint bucket, and i havent been able to procure an old propane or frion tank, so I opted for the air tank.

then I remembered I had saved the popcorn tin in case I ever built the flower pot furnace. and like the fact it has a lid.

I realize there will be some notable reinforcements necessary and then there's the issue of legs.

THEN, I started to wonder/worry if it is galvanized...

ok, I'm (not so) patiently waiting for burner and insulation supplies coming from Zoeller. I ordered supplies for the simple paint can forge, but I don't have a paint can. I purchased a 5 gallon air tank from harbor freight, but can't help but wonder if this popcorn can could work, or if it's too thin/flimsy.

although i would paint it w/high temp rustoleum, it would still be funny to know it was once sporting FROSTY the snowman! ;-P

Joel, I am anxiously awaiting my forge parts, but am practicing tapering on clay for the time being. I think I will take the multiple uniform object approach as well. And hopefully I'll remember to take pics so later I can SEE how far I've come. ;-)

O_O here's my newbie amazement! ;-) I have MUCH to learn. I did a project using punch and drift when I took a blacksmithing class a couple of years ago. the bug has festered since and I am anxiously awaiting the parts for my forge/burner... I guess I will practice on some clay.
