Man you guys are lucky. I live in Flint, MI. A heavy industrial town with TONS of scrap yards. Theres is not a yard in town willing to sell anything out the yard. I mean nothing. Once it makes it through the gate it cannot be resold. One guy even told me he thinks its actually illegal here to resell scrap.

Assuming you have a mode of transportation, I suggest going to all the big truck, tractor trailer shops and ask them if they have any scrap brake drums they would be willing to part with. Most places wont give you one because they get scrap value for them and theyre heavy, typically 100 lbs for a single drum. Just go and tell them what your going to do with it and youd be surprised that one place may just give you one. Maybe even offer to do a bit of clean up around their yard for a drum. Heck might even find your way into a job.

Thanks again for the compliments. Not too bad for a guy sitting on his garage floor in 20* temps. The toughest part was cutting the 1/2" plate with a 4" cut off wheel. It took not quite one wheel per cut. My bandsaw needs some work. It has a cracked pulley and hasnt been used in well over 10years.

Ya, I ended up working saturday. So I lost that as a day of messing around in the garage. My work schedule through the week doesnt allow me any free time M-F.

...plus its welded the same on the inside of the pot.

Heres a couple pics from the plate welding. I used the .025 wire since I had it and it was already in the welder. First pic was just an intial pass to fill the seam and put some heat in it. Second pass I just weaved side to side. I ran out of wire though so i'll use some .030 for the rest. Although I borrowed a stick welder from a friend so I may do some with that just for the experience. 

I think it came out pretty well.

Thanks for the compliments on the welds. A few years ago I decided I was gonna learn to weld  so I went to the store and bought the MIG and just plugged it in and started welding. I have alot of fun welding stuff up. I dont do it often but when I do I enjoy myself.

Couple pics of a few welds on my table. This is a Lincoln 135 MIG (not 140) using Argon/CO2 mix and .025 wire

Turns out my Grandpa has a stick welder in the fiery depths of his garage. Ill go out there and weld it up.

Im still going to atleast tack it up and then maybe see how much someone would charge me to weld it up.

I probably wont get to it until next weekend. Worst case I can have someone stick weld right over my MIG welds. Im sure ill be fine though.

Yes its a 110v welder.

I figured  it cant hurt to just lay the juice to it and go multiple passes. I can MIG weld good but I have never welded plate that thick(1/2"). I suppose a good initial preheat will help since im in the garage with no heat and its in the 20s. I will definetly do some test passes on leftover pieces.

If I thought the wife wouldnt give me the look I would just go buy a stick welder and be done with it.

Im in the process of building my first forge and have a question about welding 1/2" plate for the pot. Since its not going to carry any heavy load but it will obviously see extreme heat...would I be kidding myself trying to weld up the 1/2" plate firepot with my Lincoln 140 MIG welder? Ive been welding the table up with my MIG using gas but if need be and you think it would work I can switch to .030 flux core. Or should I just tack it up good and have someone with a big welder finish it off?

Looks nice.

Ive been working on mine all day. Almost the exact same dimensions. Mine ended up 26 x 43.25". The metal shop had a left over piece that was 43.25" so I left it since it was already a nice clean cut.

You have any pics of the outside view of the chimney... coming through the wall from the outside.

Do you think it would help to dissipate heat if you drilled holes in the lip of the table where the 1" tubing  supports meet the lip on the outside? To let heat escape from inside the 1" tubing?

Im getting my steel tomorrow and am going to build a really similar table.

I am getting ready to build my forge and was totally gonna build a 3p7 hook up to pull it in and out with my old sear tractor.

What gauge metal is the hearth? Also what gauge is the firepot?

Im thinking of building something real similar  but am unsure of the thickness I really need?

Would 3/16" be good for both the hearth and the firepot or does the firepot need to be heavier like 1/4"?

New guy from Mid Michigan. Im just getting into Blacksmithing. I have a bit of wood working equipment and now  want to set up a small smithing area to make my own handles and hinges for the furniture I make...along with other things. I havent made much lately because my woodshop was in my basement but im finishing ym basement for more living area and hoping to build a new garage out back this spring.

I just scored my first anvil yesterday. A 176lb Peter Wright.
