As a carpenter and a soon to be smith, I've seen holdfast designs using both styles. A big heavy wedge type works just fine if that is the application that the buyer is looking for. Long as that is what the customer requested, there should be no issues at all with this piece.

Hello all,
Figure it's time to finally introduce myself. I'm Dave, I've been a lurker here for a long while, finally almost in a position to get started learning for real.
You'll be seeing many posts from me in the coming months as I get my shop built and start the learning process.
Currently have a background in carpentry and ornamental woodworking, very little experience working with metal.
Want to say that this site has been an incredible source for knowledge for me and I haven't even begun to swing a hammer yet. Thank you everyone!
