I'm just starting out and was wondering if there are any blacksmiths in my area. I'm just to the north of Jackson, Alabama

Get a plastic water bottle and put gasoline in it, wait for night time, unscrew the cap an put it in the hole so that the bottle blocks the hole while the gas pours in. The fumes will kill the nest. Be sure to do it at night so that all the little monsters are home

I am wondering if anyone has ever tried to use Pine Pitch as a finish for metal. I was out collecting Pine Nuts the other day and realized I have a plentiful source for Pitch.
I'd be interested in formulas or ideas on how to make the pitch dry or harden so it isn't sticky to the touch.
I know how to make hardened pine glue. It's best to just experiment with it, but melt some pine sap and mix in some softwood ashes. It may take a few try's to get it to the perfect mixture of not too hard and not too soft -
the hood also provides shade
when working in the sunshine, shade helps you see heating colors better, so the cowl is actually a good thing for observing heating colors
Cool. I didn't even think about that. Thank you for the advice. I could use as much as I can get -
yes it removes soot and ash ... i have been doing demos for over 30 years and at first i used a open shelter without hood . after a friend setup a forge with a hood and i saw how nice it was i decided to do the same . the tables were nicer and i was breathing less smoke ...
Thank you, sir. I was curious as to whether it would be worth the extra time and work. I have a lot more questions about building my forge. Like, if I have a side blast, could I use clay to protect the tuyere? -
I'm just starting out and I built a small forge, but I'm wondering if there's any reason to have a hood on it in an open air forge. Is there a purpose for it besides ventilation?

A friend of mine was using the same kind of ironworker and didn't know he was about to punch some wearplate. The punch shot up through his chin and lodged in his cheek

To touch on Mr. David Einhorn's list, aloe is a must. I wish I had that the first time I tried my hand at it
