I've thought about doing cable steel as well for some work, What was the diameter of the cable you used?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I went and checked them out on saturday and ended up purchasing the larger one.

The pictures make the damage seem worse on both then they actually were. Now... To build a new anvil stand!

I'm looking at purchasing 2 anvils in my area. But there's some wear on the edges and I'm no expert when it comes to telling how much it will affect its usability.

The first is a Peter Wright 124 pounder. $175




And the second is a Peter Wright 243 pound monster. $400

Thanks for the fast replies! That tutorial is amazing! That seems like a great way to set it up so I don't waste too much gas and can have it bigger when needed.

I've been working with a coal forge for a few years now.

But, I've decided to switch to gas as to not torture my new neighborhood with coal smoke.

I do a bit of everything now and then so I'm having trouble deciding on decent dimensions for a forge body that will give me a good compromise between size of pieces that can be worked and amount of fuel (& number of burners) required.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good size for a general purpose forge?
