Howdy Big John, I'm a shoer also in Reno, NV. I first cut the rasps at about 6" from the non-tanged end with a hot cutter and throw them into vermiculite to anneal them. I do cut them with an abrasive wheel (chop say) a band saw will work as well. The cut is 4 inches up the center from the opposite ind that was cut. The shank end is cut in like the letter M.
