my girlfriends dad has asked me to make him a clinch block made of a farriers rasp. after a short internet search i found a picture that led me to -lo and behold- this site. the thread shows only the top and front but i would like to be able to see the side so i could get an idea as to how the rasp was folded over (and possibly forge welded or not). if anybody has more pics on the subject or could offer some advice that would be much appreciated. here is the thread http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/14943-old-farriers-rasps/

HOLY XXXX THAT THING IS WICKED!!!!!!!

ok, brazing seems to be the way. thanks guys. i have always loved maces, even more so than a blade or axe,so i figured i might want to try one one day
-
does anyone have any good refrences on making one. not looking for cast heads, i was really wondering how to attache the flanges to the shaft
-
thanks i tried that with this next one and worked pretty good. the next one has the handle made by me. carved to shape from a piece of round stock. head is the same as before, farriers rasp with a rasp bit forge welded in. ( i had more pictures but apparently my phone refuses to send all but this one to my computer, so......)

so, should i weld it further in and force it open with the drift? or am i just gonna have to know exactly where my eye is gonna be and weld it there? ive never done axes so im not really learned on the subject. thanks for the comment!

yeah, i saw their post on facebook and looked at the website. i was just wondering why?????.....these guys were like heros to me and the other smiths in my area.

anybody know why the guys over at mad dwarf workshop are closing it down? they have some really awe inspiring stuff and made weapons for 2 movies for petes sake

A wooden step will do the job nicely. Make it simple and big... don't need anybody accidentally stepping off.

thats a good suggestion. i found some fairly large pavers left over from when i was a landscaper. i think they should work. if i have the kid coming back in the future i may make that step as a more permanent fixture. -
thank you all for the advice. i had never tried to teach somone so young before so i didnt know where to start. now to figure out how to get him to actually reach my anvil XD lol

got this message on facade book today
Dear Joseph,
When I was researching blacksmithing with my son, I found your name as local to St. Mary's County.
My son is seven years old and homeschooled.
He's interested in blacksmithing.
I'm wondering if you or someone you know might be willing to show him around some equipment and teach him a little about the trade.
Thank you!
Any suggestions on what to use as an introduction? -

well, ticked off right now. just craked the machete in the heat treat. it was my own fault, i had over heated it in one section and quenched it....well guess where the crack showed up at. thing was the rest of the heat treat turned out amazing. edge was a nice hardness and the spine was springy all except in that one tiny spot........guess i gotta start over

i had never heard of boron steel until you said something and then lo' and behold what do i see stamped into a padlock at work.... BORON STEEL! lol aint that how it always is.
-
no its definatly nothing like that lol. it shapes pretty good under the hammer and i had no trouble drilling the holes is the tang. but once you harden it up it gets nice and springy. at leastr that was my experiance with the first one i made. i havnt touched this blade since the post because i have been out of town for work.

hmm never heard of boron steel
-
no not really i make blades for fun all the time, so i figure if i can sell one even at a low price thats a good thing.
So you will be taking a real hit on your labour costs? -
draw filing is done with a metal file. the sand paper is there to get rid of the scrtaches the file leaves and so on up to your desired grit. its only at 40 grit right now on one side, the other is 80 grit. i belive that this is the 80 grit side. im going to edge quench in oil because i dont want to risk it, seeing how its an uknown steel. if thats not hard enough i will use water. i guess ill find out, lol

thanks, my girlfriends dad gave me an old rasp and i really like what i can do with the metal. hopefully he can get me more since he knows a couple farriers.

not shure what you mean by this, seeing as how you have never met my girlfriend........
Make a brand of your initials. with her GOTH tendencies it should be well appreciated. EH?
BUT for all of my friends who put up the really good information, thank you! i never expected so many replies. i am going to try and make some Mokume tommorow morning and if that dosnt work out i will do the bottle cap roses
