Thought i'd drop a line to introduce myself. I have been a avid hobbying smith for about a year now. My brother in law and I have been putting a shop together and he encouraged me to get on Iforge Iron. Very excited about this craft and am very open to new ideas/suggestions. Also, I am a member of the Old Dominion Blacksmith Association in Virginia.

If you are a begging smith, one of the easiest in terms of cost and startup, would be a hand cranked (portable) rivet forge. I have only been doing this about a year, and thats what kind of forge we have. It has served well for various projects, and they are relatively easy to find used and on average would cost $100 to $300 dollars depending on the condition.
