Atleast you were able to inherit yours, mine got sold out of the family's wishes and is now gone.
Currently looking to buy one but there are hard to come by in southern california.
Hey twig, I had the same problem, but don't be discouraged by not having an "real" anvil. Just keep looking, you will find one sure enough. Try craigslist, that's where I found my 175# PW after roaming the pages for 4 months
Good luck to you -
Oh and welcome to the wonderful world of blacksmithing brother :D
-
Hey Grundge, there are tons of ways to cut your rasps, it just depends on what's going to be easier for you. If you have a hot cut just heat that bad boy up and start cutting down the lenght of your rasp, or you could hacksaw it is that's an easier route? Angle grinder with a cut off wheel even!

In my opinion the rail road should be fined for leave junk laying around. I know if I was to leave 8 foot high stack of logs laying in my yard for years as well at large hunks of steel thousands on nails and sheet metal I would get a fine even though I own my land so they should too. whats fair is fair. just my two cents.
Hear hear. -
Jeeze, I guess i got lucky, i bought a PW 170# in better shape than that one for 250$!

I am still itching to go out and do a little more, but its dark already and i dont have a shop so im outside with no light or shelter and its getting pretty nippy latley, cant wait for tomorrow though! -
congratulations, my friend. excellent investment and a world of pleasure are now before you!
Thank you very much! -
I got the anvil today, my dad brought it home right after school, i fired up the forge made a few nails and i'll tell you what for 250$ this PW was a steal, it just has some rounded corners, a piece of rail road track doesn't even compare to this baby!

My dad is driving up to pay for it tomorrow, then I'll be helping him pick up saturday! I'm excited
-
I hope one day i will be doing the same thing, i've been into blacksmithing for a two or so months now and its all i think about. It's a load of fun

I think i saw in a thread that fireyfurnace. that his screen name had built a chimney like that. If you find him you could ask him
-
I hear really good things about them, and being a beginning smith i think it would be great to have such a great tool
-
yes
I figured haha, I will be heading up to check it out tomorrow or saturday for sure! -
I have a lead on peter wright in good condition(says the seller) He's asking 250$ dollars for it. Weight according to my calculations should be around 170#. go for it?

I guess I should have ask what size truck (grin). Big Rig or just a 3/4 ton pick up?
One word of caution, if it is a single rotor your ok, but if it is a double rotor you will need to fill the space between the two rotors with something to keep the air and fire from going between the discs.
Alright I will be sure to check for the two part rotor and it would definitely have to be a rotor from a 3/4 ton its to small to be a big rig. I'm pretty excited to put it together this weekend!
Is This Anvil Any Good?

Looks like a ruse if you ask me. I wouldn't buy it if i were you, your better off looking on craigslist you don't want to end up with a huge hunk of cast iron.
Goodluck on your anvil hunt. Dean
