I would appreciate and views on if this would be a good way to sharpen knives.
I have seen people use non powered systems before and to be honest I really do not relish sitting for hours grinding away on a knife blade like that.

Huge thanks everyone I live in Vermont, I know of only one school in the state and frankly I unfortunately do not have the time to be able to invest in a regular class schedule I know that sounds like a cop out but to be honest the way I work I do not have the time I would love to have to drive over an hour each way for a class, smithing for me for the forseeable future will be something I will really only be able to do in my spare time.

While I am aware of the hurdles in front of me doing this as a self taught thing at present I do not see any options, now if there is someone in the state that would be willing to do things on a less than regular schedule that could be a negotiable thing.

I am planning on starting my forge hopefully in the spring, but I have zero ability to be able to go to a school to learn blacksmithing. Are there any resources that could be recommended for someone who really has no option but to learn from home?

I found a place that sells Refractory Cement, figure it has to be the same thing. It is called Homesaver Flue Goo, it can withstand temps up to 3000 degrees. It can bond Masonry to masonry, steel to steel and masonry to steel. Hope that helps.

I have some questions about the wash tub forge design. first can this be used for coal, second what is the actual tub made out of and lastly what do you line it with, clay or something else.

I have been doing that and I will continue to do so, but at least I know a place I can get one that is both good and relatively inexpensive. The guy that is helping me out recommended that I get at least a 150 lb anvil and all the ones I have seen on Craigs list are either too small or too far away and do not ship.

Thanks everyone you pretty much sole me on getting that one, just thought I would pass along a bit of a find I made. Mid West Farrier Supplies out of Illinois sells that particular anvil for $568.00, other places I saw sold it for over 800. Not exactly sure why they are so much less but seems to be a great deal nonetheless.

I am just starting out and I have found a 160 J.H.M. Shaper Anvil and I am wondering if this is a good anvil to start out with.
