  1. ......But failed. It eventually took two of us to load it, and my van was creaking under the weight, but it's now home; my new (to me at least!) #455 Peter Wright.

The markings aren't too clear, but they read 'Peter Wright......Patent......England.......Solid Wrought'
The number stamping reads 4-0-7 rolling in at #455.

It rings loudly when hammering steel, so I proposed to either mount it on a trunk and sell the stand or wrap chain around the anvil and use a combination of lead and silicone under the feet to assist in deadening the sound. My other Peter Wright was deadened nicely by mounting on a stump, so I'll have to see if my forester friend will find me a trunk cutting.

I understand that this anvil came from a decorative ironwork forge near Birkenhead on the Wirral; the other side of the Mersey estuary to Liverpool. It appears to be a post-1910 production (unless someone can shed more light on the markings and age.....please do!) and probably had a hard life prior to being used in the Birkenhead forge and may have been used by a toolsmith or bladesmith judging by the chiselmarks!

It'll be my primary user, that's for sure!

  2. So I just bought a sweet 101 pound Brooks anvil on ebay from Matchless antiques (Steve). Anyway its wrought iron and it appears that Steve use some sort of blasting medium to clean off the surface rust. It is awful pretty right now and i would really like to keep it that way. No I know what your saying its in a blacksmith shop its not supposed to be pretty, but this is an 1885 wrought iron anvil and it is in remarkable shape and I want to keep it that way. However it's starting to rust again. I don't really want to paint it, so I was thinking of lightly taking a propane torch to heat up just the body just enough to burn on some beeswax. anyone have any better ideas?

by the way it is the anvil on the bottom.

All you need to put on the anvil is some paste type mink oil do this about every three months let me know how it works for you. Shawn barneylynn@bellsouth.net

  3. Found this a couple of weeks ago at a local farrier supply. Used but in really good condition. Picture is from the internet, but it is the exact same anvil. Fella wants $350 CDN, I think that's a bit high. Anyone have one of these?
It was apparently made in Sweden for Centaur by Kohlswa.

I would snatch it up I gave $500 for one just like it.They are very nice anvils to have. Thanks Shawn barneylynn@bellsouth.net

    400 lb peter wright

Just thought you might like to hear my Peter Wright story. I found a 514lb Peter Wright on craigs list a few weeks ago for $725 and $189 for freight.I think I got a great deal!! But I called the person right away and secured getting the anvil ,When you find a large one like this you had better jump on it right away because they are not plentiful and will more than likely go quick. I am very thankfull for the anvil. This makes my tenth anvil my other largest one is a JHM Competitor 260lbs I liked it alot but wanted a antique larger one and now I have one .I really like your Peter Wright it looks like it has been taken care of and not abused as mine is. I think Peter Wrights are one of the best anvils that were made and that one can own Thanks,Shawn
