  1. just pulled these wheels out of the bush near bayside of brisbane (secret local).big cast wheels, forged axels 2.5 inch*2.5inch.dose any one know this touch mark.the lettering seems to be rton then the mark?

nice find... i got a couple of theorys for ya... rton is an abreviation for Rockhampton and as it turns out i think the toowoomba foundry had a foundry up there in the late 1800's- early 1900's... the toowoomba foundry specialized in large castings like locomotive wheels ect.

the other theory is it could be part of a peice of farm machinary that has been recycled that was made by "Norton"....

I,m not sure about the trademark, it may have been put there later by a smith that recycled some bits of other equipment...

    I,m probably wrong....

I,m tipping it was probably used for the logging industry... i think cleveland is where the boats used to come in for the logs...

There,s a book at the victoria point libary about a well know'n Blacksmith from thornlands, who was working at about that time... you never know it could be his mark... next time i,m at the libary i,ll see if i can find the book and see if that can offer any leads...

  2. Really?! that's awesome.
I will definitely have to take you up on that offer,
though, after seeing some of your work i think i'll learn alot more from you than you will from me :)

HaHa dont worry man I,ve only been making knives for a couple of years... i got arsy one day and won some money on the pokies so i went out and bought a drill press, a linisher and a whole heep of other stuff... with the right equipment it gets a whole lot easyer... I,ll see if i can email my phone number to you... give us a call, ask for matt, and you can come over and checkout the forge.... my email is slain121@hotmail.com

    regards, Matt.

  3. Nice knife man, great lines! looks very comfortable in hand

Thanks Randy, this one leans more to the stock removal side, I,ve been layed up with a back injury for the last couple of months, so my hammer swing isnt what it used to be... the only time it hit the forge was to straiten and flatten the leaf spring and when it was heat treated... the rest was done on a linisher...

I,m starting to take a shineing to stock removal... lol

  4. Well done on this one
thats a knife i'd love to have in my collection.
It looks like it just wants to be used.
with a good sheath it would be perfect.
I'm sure your dad will love it mate

Thanks Karl... hey I see your from Redland Bay.... Me too.... if you wanna come over for a forge one day just let me know....

    Regards, Matt.

  5. G'day!
My name is Karl Buhse and I'm from Redland Bay, south of Brisbane QLD.
I'm a hobby blacksmith(wish i was a blacksmith by trade) and I've been interested in blacksmithing ever since a smith at Timbertown made me a horseshoe with my name stamped on it in 1996(I was 5).
I would really love to come along to the A.B.A.Qld meetings but i work on saturdays, so obviously i need to quit my job.
Anyway its great to know there are so many keen Aussies on here and see some of you around maybe.

    Cheers

How are you Karl.... I live at redland bay too.... let me know if you want to come over for a hit one day, mabbe a sunday or something...
    your welcome anytime.

  6. haha yeah i'm an Aussie, This is the best country to live in!
I've never been to townsville tho, i will have to sometime

I got stuck in townsville for two weeks once after my wallet got stollen outside some pub.... i had to find work on a fishing boat to get out of there... jumped off the boat in cairns.... much nicer..
  7. thanks for the comments guys.... i got some bad news the other day.... that first knife that i traded in another forum never made it to it,s destination.... it,s been ether stolen by a mail man or it,s fallen out of it,s package somewhere between Australia and America.... I,m going with the first guess though, because there,s no way it could have cut it,s way out of the package.... there,s some lucky mail man or customs officer out there somewhere with a nice hand made knife.... I knew that knife had another destiny, it stabbed me in the hand about 6 times wile i was polishing it.... hopefully it will do the same to it,s new owner.

  8. On bronze swords that were cold worked to finish that grain refinement may have added strength and hardness, but the grain refinement from work is removed in heat treat on steel, or any metal that gets heated.
    Phil

well that's what I had tossing and turning in my head too.... after the steel has been normalized before heat treatment, your right, it shouldn't have a tighter grain structure....

It was still an interesting Doco, and the guy that was making the sword was not an amateur by any standards....

So I don't really know what to think on that one.... it makes an interesting argument though.
  9. the one I had at mikes place was a different knife but the same design... It had York gum burl scales and nickel silver bolsters and pins... and the blade was forged out of coil spring, so it wasn't 5160, but something equally as good, but not as shiny lol....

My scale supplier is in WA here's a link to his E bay store...

eBay Australia Shop - WEST AUSTRALIAN WOOD SUPPLIER: PEN BLANKS, KNIFE SCALES GUN GRIPS, BLANKS

He,s always got good quality scales and blocks.

  10. I watched a documentary once on swords and apparently when the blood groove is forged in with a top and bottom fuller it actually compacts the steel and gives it a tighter grain structure.... they where saying if the blood groove is machined in, it leaves that part with the same type of grain structure as the rest of the blade and therefore makes it weaker because that part is now thinner than the rest of the blade....

when it's properly forged in it makes it stronger because the steel along the fuller line is slightly harder from being compressed a little.

it kind of makes sense to me.

  11. Hears a picture of my latest knife.... I traded this in another forum....
the blade is 5160 leaf spring... forge hardened and tempered... Brass bolsters and pins and the handle scales are red morrell burl from western Australia.

  12. Matt hear, from Brisbane... arrr yes the sale of the century.... What i could do if i had about $10,000 right now.... Power hammer-/ new car...power hammer-/ new car.....
it would be a hard decision but the power hammer would win...... hell i could probably forge a new car if i had that thing.

Well Mabe after a few more decades worth of practice anyway....

yep i,m another Aussie... i,m from Redland Bay, 30 minutes from Brisbane city.... I,v made a few knives and desecrated the odd anvil or two.

  13. a 50/50 mix of mineral spirets and linseed oil applied at about 200-300 degrees works amazingly well, foodsafe too if you give it about a month b4 letting it touch any food

Could this be done on the final stage of tempering the blade in the oven?... i'm just never really that keen to re-heat a blade after I've done the heat treatment on it.

Although i know 300 isn't quite tempering heat for some steels...
  14. I use car polish.

Car polish is good... just make sure it's the wax type.... i think its called carnuba wax or something....

i don't know if you guys have access to lanolin grease, (wool fat) but if you can get your hands on a tub of that stuff, it's up there with the best as well... Laplander's have been using it for century's...

you might find some at a saddlery or something, as its used for leather as well...

personally i like beezwax... it has a nice smell... lol
  15. Hi all.... My name is Matt, i,m from Brisbane Australia.... i,v been forging knives for about 12 months so far... i,v made a couple of beauties, but i still have a bit to learn, as far as treating different types of steel go,s.... so far i,v only used 5160 for my knives.... soon i will be doing a blade made from D2... i,m studied up on how to heat treat it, so all i have to do is make the blade and then put the theory to practice...

I,ll try and get some photo,s of my knives up when i get a chance...

    Matt
