Weld Hard
we have a foundry for pouring cast iron into molds in our town. I scored some black shiny rock that they say they add to the furnace to increase the carbon content. is this something of intrest for increasing carbon content in low C steel? I am new and have not forged yet but wanna start soon. I am not going to try this till experience goes up but is this something that would migrate into the steel after being heated till the non magnetic stage for several hours under a no oxygen atmophere? ThomasPowers
Almost *any* carbon containing compound will work for pack carburization---in an air tight container. Last one I did I took a piece of exhaust pipe and closed and folded over one end and filled it with powdered charcoal and shoved my pieces into that and then flattened and folded the open end and placed it in my gas forge along one side and "forgot about it" for several days of forging. The pipe ended up scaling away but the wrought iron blistered. I've used leather scraps, horn shavings, peach pits, etc before. It's the temp and time and no O2 that is what is doing the work.
