Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Welcome from the Ozark Mountains. Not knowing your general location, it's hard to say for sure. Here in the U.S. leaf springs are generally good steel to make knives from, if properly quenched and tempered (heat treated). I would have no qualms about selling or gifting a knife made from leaf spring, after telling the recipient what it was made from. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s.~ Semper Paratus
BillyBones
I am not a bladesmith but it is my understanding that it is used/old springs that can cause a problem. Microfractures from stress can cause the knife to break when used. Seeing as how you used a new spring that problem shouldnt be present unless a flaw in manufacturing process. Not being a bladesmith does not mean i have never made a blade. Last year i made a chefs knife for a coworker from an old leaf spring. it has held up nicely and he says it has not even needed sharpening yet. But that is a kitchen knife and will not be subject to the abuses something like a Bowie knife will take.
Frosty
Welcome aboard Peck, glad to have you. If you put your general location in the header you'll have a chance of meeting up with members living within visiting distance. Judging by your question regarding the steel and it's usefulness for making a blade I think you don't know enough about making blades to be thinking of selling them. The liability YOU assume selling blades can follow you for many years and an improperly heat treated blade can fail catastrophically causing serious injury. Frosty The Lucky.
