Greetings all,

I inherited a large anvil and I'm trying to figure out what it is and some of it's history.  I "believe" it's a Hay Budden but I can't be sure.  I've attached a few pictures of the markings I have found.  I'm sure you all get tired of these posts and I truly appreciate any help you can give me!

I think it may be an Arm & Hammer as Hay Budden's I have seen have the weight on the side under the name logo. With the 360 on the front foot (weight) and the serial number is what leads me to think Arm & Hammer. Both are very good anvils and yours hasn't been mistreated. Someone with a copy of Anvils in America may be able to look up the serial number.

Trenton stamps their numbers that way, although that neck doesn't really look Trenton-ish. I've seen a few similar ones though. You may want to tilt it and rub the sides with chalk or baby powder to bring out faint markings. If that were a Trenton, you'd be looking for the remains of a stamped diamond, and it would be about a 1917 Anvil. Also, it often helps to take pictures of the other sides - and does it have a depression on the bottom of the anvil? If so, what shape?

Also Arm & Hammer usually have telltale power hammer marks under the heel, so a picture there would also help. Besides that we love pictures. The double steps to the face from the horn also throws a curve at me, looks like someone added another face plate.

That i'm fairly sure is a Trenton. I'd have to double check the book on when they stopped having "A" before the serial number. But that is indeed the Trenton way of stamping the weight and serial number. Arm and Hammer I believe also only has serial numbers up to about 50,000.
