jrigal
Hi, first post. Been looking for an anvil for a few weeks. Came across an older used Peddinghaus #12, and I’m having a hard time finding info on the older ones. There seems to be little info on the ones marked only “Peddinghaus” with the weight number under it. Mainly I want to be sure it’s not a fake. I noticed concern in several posts about that. It’s definitely stamped and the logo font looks right. The hardie hole is chamfered. Its 2 hours away and gas is high, so I was hoping to get a little info about these first. Anvils are slim around here. We have a couple collectors who’ve been buying up anvils for decades. I visited with one guy who had almost 200 anvils. Also, people usually want $5/lb (or more) around here. But this one is under $4/lb. Here’s the pics I have.
Latticino
Old Peddinghaus are arguably better than the new ones. The one I used at NESM had the hardest face of any anvil I have used before or since. This one looks like it is in great condition. I would jump on it as fast as possible if the price were anywhere near reasonable. If it was closer I'd be tempted, and I certainly don't need another anvil. At under $4 per pound this won't last long. Don't know anything about fake Peddinghaus anvils.
TWISTEDWILLOW
Howdy from eastern Oklahoma and welcome to the forum! where bouts in north Louisiana are ya? I got kinfolk down in homer i don’t have much experience with peddinghaus anvils but it looks pretty slick to me for under $4 bucks a pound! jrigal
Thanks for the welcome! I’m in West Monroe. If I can make sure it’s not a fake or a copy - and I don’t even know if anybody did straight up copies from this era - I’ll hit the road in the morning. I did message Joey on FB, I read he knows more about these. Haven’t heard back yet. The only other usable anvil I’ve found here was a 176 lb PW for $900. Good anvils are slim here. Found a 100 lb Hay Budden missing about 15% of the top plate for $425. Found another 175 PW, but had been broken in half at the waist and welded together. Not to mention the edges were all chipped away. They still wanted $850.
Latticino
Like I said, if I were in the market and this one was only 2 hr drive away, I'd already be on the road. Hope you get lucky. Note: a few weeks of looking is nothing. Some people look for months or even years.
jrigal
Anybody know any kind of history or timeline for Peddinghaus? Looking for an era for this version. The seller said he was told 1930’s or 40’s, but wasn’t sure.
Latticino
I assume you have already thoroughly read through this post: It appears to address a lot of your questions.
jrigal
Yep! A couple times. Based on that it seems that most fakes would be glaringly obvious. Wish I could find date info though.
ThomasPowers
What you need to do is the ring test and the ball bearing test. If they are good then the anvils worth the price no matter WHO made it. (Basically these two tests are like checking out the engine and transmission of a used car; they fail; then the value plummets!)
jrigal
Picked it up today! $800, so $2.90 a pound. I’ll post pics when I get it cleaned up.

Julianb
Hello, that is a Peddinghaus 125kg model of more recent manufacture. This type of stamp was the last before they were marketed under the "Ridgid" brand. Definitely not 1930s, but that doesn't matter qualitywise. Cheers!
