beslagsmed
I am getting a piece of a M242 Bushmaster barrel. The guy wants a knife made from it. I have no idea on how to heat treat it. Anyone here can give me some advice.
Frosty
Have him give you enough extra you can test and evaluate it. Tell him it's not a proper blade steel, you WILL NOT guarantee it's suitability for anything but a display blade. Without knowing there's really nothing else you can do. Frosty The Lucky. Frazer
Some of the folk who know more about barrels can probably make a more educated guess as to what they are made out of. I would wager 1045 (C45) ish? Maybe 4140 (42CrMo4)? Whether my guesses are right or wrong, cut a few test pieces and quench in various mediums and see what happens. The desired qualities for a gun barrel steel don't seem to translate over to blade steels in my mind, but who knows.
ThomasPowers
Yes what alloys make a good gun barrel make a low grade knife and vice versa! Now you could use it in a pattern welded billet or as the sides in San Mai and use a good knife steel alloy for the rest of it.
beslagsmed
Good advice, I think I will have enough to do that. Good idea. I got some other steel that would blend to make a good damascus blade. Edited May 18, 2022 by Mod30 Excessive quoting
