ClevelandGuy
The subject says it all. I know the local club has historically made 50# bags available to members for a reasonable price, but they're offline until March, and I don't know if they're even meeting in the world of COVID anyway. ThomasPowers
Can you call up some members and find out where they were buying it? You can probably find folks selling it in the old paper version of the yellow pages; but always try a bucket first as home heating coal may not be what you like forging with---depending on their source! Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
In our area the paper version of the yellow pages, is down to about six pages now, mostly lawyers and doctors.
ThomasPowers
Don't you have an old copy hidden in the "junk" drawer?
JHCC
It's a bit of a drive, but Yoder Blacksmith Supply down in Fredericksburg carries smithing coal in 50 lb sacks. If you can't make it during the week, they're open on Saturday mornings from 7:00 to 11:00.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
I have a whole filing cabinet with 6 junk drawers. I finally threw out stuff from 2001, included were two thick yellow pages books. One was from 1982 when we lived in Florida. What was that about "when do you throw stuff out". BillyBones
I get mine bulk out of Vandalia. He delivers if you buy enough, i am fairly close to him so his minimum for me is a ton. Dont know how much you would need to buy to get him to come to Cleveland though. $215 a ton this past summer. PM me if you wan his contact info. If you are willing to drive there is also SOFA (Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil) in Troy that may be able to hook you up.
ThomasPowers
When I moved to a new location one of the things I did was to scrounge a set of YP from the nearest city so I could find all the stuff it takes years to locate "socially". You are right that most of the ones being published nowadays are worthless as are the search functions on browsers due to being overloaded with trash---how many times has it happened lately that when you are looking for a companies own website it's not even on the first page of search results; but tens of places trying to insert themselves in between you and where you want to go are on the first page! I've been there a couple of times over the past couple of years.
JHCC
As I understand it, a lot of the Amish never answer the phone but will return a message. Part of their practice of keeping boundaries between their communities and the English (i.e., non-Amish) world.
ClevelandGuy
Makes sense. I'm heading down there today...I'm off and they're open, and it's too cold to forge (although maybe later this afternoon). Would you like me to grab you a couple bags? Text me at phone number removed if you want me to pick some up for you.
JHCC
No, but thanks for the offer. I'm using gas almost exclusively at the moment, and I've got a decent supply of solid fuel in case I need to do something that won't fit in the forge or that is too big for the torch. Much appreciated, though.
