Adriaan Gerber
I have a 20 ton press from Riverside Machinery and I've been wanting to make tooling for it to hot punch out various shapes in 1/4" steel. Rather than reinventing the wheel, I thought I'd ask the group about easy ways to make tooling for this. I'd want to start by punching out 1" round slugs. Any help would be appreciated. bubba682
I made most of my punches out of used jackhammer bits and welded them to 1/2 '' plate they have held up over 3 years now with no issues.
swedefiddle
Good Morning, Punching 1" holes in 1/4" plate is a job that a 'Punch Press' or an 'Ironworker' does easily. It happens with a BANG when cold. Ironworker Dies are available in different sizes, I have seen some at Pr----Au-o occasionally. Punching Hot is a lot easier, but would be done with different tooling. What is your mission, to punch a hole, or to create a slug? Frosty
Saw them off a length of 1" round bar. It will be faster with much less clean up and less equipment wear. A 1" slug from 1/4" plate or strap stock is a hard bite for a 20 ton press and punches that can't be driven through quickly suffer more wear. I don't know if you could "Die Blank" slugs that size but maybe. Frosty The Lucky.
BIGGUNDOCTOR
Swing by a large fab shop if you have one around. Ask if they have a punch, and get their slugs. The shops that work with structural steel usually have ironworkers in the plant.

ThomasPowers
Yes anywhere they are punching the holes in structural beams should have buckets of slugs that they would be happy to share for a box of doughnuts or brown pop! I was able to pick up a few slugs from a place that did ship construction/repair work, 3/8" and thicker and 6" across, nicely domed from the punch; I used them for dishing forms.
