Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Welcome aboard... The only thing that anvil needs is hot steel hammered on it's hardened face. Leave the paint is the best option IMHO. Definitely do not do any grinding, milling or welding on the hardened steel face. The 97 is the weight give or take a couple of pounds which can be confirmed with a bathroom scale. Have you done a ring & rebound test? That will tell you the condition of the welded on face plate. I did a quick search as outlined in the Read This First thread and came up with a few threads about your anvil. This is but one. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/65559-american-dunn-murcott-damage-help/
