I Forge Iron

Peasant knife metal from days of yore

This led me to look up what's going on with the wreck of Shackleton's ship Endurance. It seems that the wreck has not yet been located, but it's assumed to be lying in an area with a flat bottom and low sedimentation, so it might also be exceptionally well-preserved.

Have the clay tablets in your archives dried out and hardened?

It's early May in northern Ohio. Of course not. The clay doesn't dry until June at the earliest.

There was a pretty good program on either Nat Geo or the Smithsonian Channel about searching for Endurance. Lots of tracking and plotting currents, side scan sonar and remote vehicles. Ship wreckage was located in or close to the target area but ID was indeterminate. Lots of whaling vessels were locked in ice and drifted in that circular current sometimes escaping, sometimes breaking up even taking years to sink completely.
