Irondragon Forge ClayWorks Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 Outstanding restoration, ya done good and I'm envious. Anvils aren't the only thing blackksmith's have envy over. Don't know if you have seen this. There is a lot of info about the company. There is an ad picture down the page of your forge. https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Alldays_and_Onions#cite_note-2 Quote
Inflight Posted March 21, 2021 Author Posted March 21, 2021 (edited) Thanks, Irondragon! I abrasive blasted and painted everything, inside and out. I was told the hand-crank gearbox leaked oil, so I flattened all the mating surfaces and used permatex RTV gasket material to seal everything. I've done a couple heats with coke and it works well. I've seen the images and read the company history on gracesguide.co.uk. Thanks again, Matt Edited March 21, 2021 by Mod30 Remove excessive quote. Quote
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 Those blowers leak when they are over filled. They use a splash oil system, where the lowest gear teeth run in the oil and splash the rest of the gears & bearings. Quote
bluerooster Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 And I'm allways over filling mine. I figure best too much than not enough. Quote
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 I have a tendency to overfill too. Helps to have a dirt floor so clean up is no problem. I have found one of the oils that leak the least is chainsaw bar oil with a little STP oil treatment mixed in. Quote
Frosty Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 I use chainsaw bar oil with about 1/4 cup of Duralube to a gallon jug. I put a few drops in the oil ports at the beginning of a session and it lubes it nicely for a days use. Eventually even that little bit seeps out. Chainsaw bar oil is sticky so it doesn't sling off the high speed gears. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
