Glader Gold Fire
I want to make a 2''x 72'' belt sander/grinder made from a Ryobi(brand) 6'' bench grinder. Any ideas on how to do it or where to find instructions/information on it?
ThomasPowers
How many horse power is that grinder?
JHCC
What's the HP rating on the motor? 2x72 needs some significant oomph, so if your grinder doesn't have enough power, you're setting yourself up for failure before you even start. Steve Sells
I doubt his Ryobi is over 1 Hp so I agree with John
JHCC
I just googled 6" Ryobi grinders, and most of them are listed as 2.1 amps. If my calculations are correct, that would be about 1/4 hp.
Steve Sells
for the record, when I last bought a used 1.5 Hp motor from the repair shop, I paid $75. So its not too bad buying the correct size motor to build a grinder, Save the Ryobi for a buffer
JHCC
I have a similar size bench grinder that has a wire wheel on one side and a regular grindstone on the other. The wire wheel gets a lot of use for cleaning up residual scale, and the grinder is mainly for sharpening drill bits.
philb86
They make something called a Multi Tool Grinder for bench grinders. I started out making knives with one of them before I built my 2 x 72 grinder, and it did quite well. I think they are reasonably price IIRC and come in different sizes, I used the 2 x 36 and still have it.
