How to edit a link

Sometimes when you paste a link into a topic or a comment in IFI (within the no-commercial-content guideline of the TOS), it's okay to use the entire URL. For example, the website for the Federal Student Aid office in the U.S. Department of Education is https://studentaid.gov/, which is nice and short. Sometimes the URL is somewhat longer but still acceptable, such as https://studentaid.gov/help-center/answers/article/how-to-get-federal-student-loan. Sometimes, however, a URL is just waaaaaaaay too long and takes up too much space on the page, such as https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=ALeKk0040oSip2Ii5VYDC8dXFNFgjrAMSw%3A1610648387821&ei=Q4sAYKvTMZK15gK5uou4BQ&q=federal+student+aid+loan+application+subsidized&oq=federal+student+aid+loan+application+subsidized&gs_lcp=CgZwc3ktYWIQAzIFCCEQoAEyBQghEKABMgUIIRCgAToHCAAQsAMQQzoFCAAQyQM6AggAOgYIABAWEB46CAghEBYQHRAeOgQIIRAKUPUnWN1cYM1faAFwAngAgAHLAYgBnhaSAQcxNy4xMC4xmAEAoAEBqgEHZ3dzLXdpesgBCsABAQ&sclient=psy-ab&ved=0ahUKEwjrgI7ohJzuAhWSmlkKHTndAlcQ4dUDCA0&uact=5.

In this last case, you have two options. The first is to use the Link button at the top of the Edit window. If you click on this, you will get two fields: one for the URL itself, and one for the text to display (the full URL will display if you don't put anything in this window. Using this method, here is that last big URL with a shorter and more descriptive link: Google search for application for subsidized federal student loans. Much better.

If you have already submitted the topic or saved your comment, you can still go back and edit it within a short time window. Click the (...) in the upper right-hand corner for More Options, and then click on Edit. Move your cursor over the link and doubleclick. This will open the same Link box as described above, and you can edit the text to display as you please.

If you have missed the editing window, go to More Options and click on Report. You can use this to ask one of the mods to edit the link for you.
