Ally4236
Thus was in family for over 50 years. Previously used as a shop anvil Weighs 80 pounds 8x7x7 Labeled S&S 1956 Has a 6 inch bounce with a ball ping hammer What is this? Can I sell as an anvil? How should I price it? Thanks Alan
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Welcome aboard... Looks a lot like a large power hammer die to me. Of course if you can pound hot metal on it, it is an anvil. I know S&S is an anvil manufacture Sichelschmidt Schlasse. (Aka. S&S). Your other question regarding price is hard to answer, not knowing where in the world you are located. Hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show location. Ally4236
Thank you so much!! I'm in Cary NC My dad passed a year ago and I'm trying to clear out items. A quick estimate would be outstanding! Thanks again for taking your time to reply to my question Thanks much Alan
ThomasPowers
Note that a 6" bounce with a ballpeen is pretty poor if dropped from 4' and great if dropped from 7 inches---it's meaningless without the details.
Ally4236
Thanks Thomas Good point I have zero experience with anvils but more I read about this trade the more interesting it gets I'll measure it accurately and try again. Thanks for the feedback!! Alan
JHCC
This reminds me of a kind of traditional Chinese anvil sometimes called a "turtle":
