Red Shed Forge
John, that is quite scrapadacious and I love it. That is all.

I have one I made from a party balloon helium tank with some salvaged 10" heating duct to pull the smoke out the door of my garage, and it works great The helium tank doesn't need anything to reduce the volume inside it like some of the plans for box type super suckers does it? ThomasPowers
Of course that might depend on which size of party helium tank you have. I have a couple of different sized ones hanging in the rafters of my shop to give away to new smiths who want to do something unwise for forge building... Nope. The important constriction (so far as I can tell) is the initial one of the opening being smaller than the flue. Once you have a draft started (which the fire itself usually creates just fine, but can be goosed along with a lit ball of newspaper in the box), the constriction causes an increase in flow speed and a decrease in the surrounding pressure. This pulls more smoke into the hood and up the flue. Bernoulli for the win! 18 minutes ago, ThomasPowers said: Of course that might depend on which size of party helium tank you have. Mine is from one of those balloon kits one buys for kids' parties; it's about the same size as the freon tanks one can get from HVAC technicians. bluerooster
55 gallon drum makes a fine hood, another mabe 30 gallon for a flue pipe. and yer good to go. You can mount the 55 to the hearth, and cut an opening to acess the forge. Here's what I have, and it works well to draw the smoke up and out.
