Help with identifying this anvil

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

As a longtime viewer of IFI I have finally joined. I would appreciate any help in identifying this anvil. I would like to purchase it. I think it is a Swedish anvil but I can’t be sure as the seller cannot see any markings on it other than the weight of 205lbs and what looks like a raised “11” or “17” on the other side. It is a fairly pricey purchase so I just want to make sure I am making a smart decision.

Thank you for any help!

-Chris

Welcome aboard Chris, glad you finally delurked.

That sure looks like it could be a cast Swedish steel anvil, it has the look of a Soderfors and other than the rust pits looks to be in good condition, hardly any chips even. 205 lbs. is a good shop anvil weight too.

Can you lay hands on it for a better examination? Take a good stiff ideally a butcher block brush and bearing balls or small smooth faced hammer to do a little rebound testing? A cast Swede anvil will give around 90% + rebound with a bearing if the face is clean. The horn typically isn't nearly as hard as the face.

How much is the asking price and how long has it been on the market? If it's as made hard, she's only weathered, you aren't going to have many bargaining chips to play. If she's a Swede in that condition and undamaged she's worth a pretty penny. Depending on the market in your location of course.

Thank you for the information Frosty!

I will hopefully be getting my hands on it in a few days. I will check for the rebound and I’ll bring some chalk to rub on the sides to see if there are any markings. It’s a hike to get there so that’s why if it is indeed a Swedish anvil I’m going for it. I know how much you love your Soderfors! I would love to have a good sized Swedish shop anvil.
