Curious about an odd fitting on a vise

I would guess air cylinder on the back and the street ell is for the air connection.    Adjust to fit the object with the vise handle, then rapid close and release via a foot or hand valve for the air.  Likely a spring inside the air cylinder to release the vise when the air supply is dumped.

Just the one fitting? I think John's interpretation is a good one. Sort of like air brakes on a truck, lose air and they clamp down.

Maybe if there are two fittings it could be an air motor in/out but I doubt it.

If it were cheap enough I'd turn it into a beer tap and hang it on the wall behind my desk. Well, something cool.
