Laying out some bits and pieces to get an idea how I might finish this gator in the last 3 days I have to even work on it. Wish I had more time. Dont we all lol. Still a few more bits to go. Basically it should roughly look like it is coming out of the water with only its front half kinda showing. Arms will be angled (they are just laid flat at the moment) and chains lining the back pretty much. I'm still iffy about the neck to body transition  but have some ideas.

Ugh, I hate being rushed.

Today taking a half day off from work to go to PT and load up the last of the hoard to take to the NMABA meeting tomorrow and hopefully selling it off!   If it sells that should cover the last payment to the electrician, any left over goes for LG parts.

I loaded the heaviest pieces last night on my own---I have a beam with a lifting eye in it over the roll up door and I used a come-a-long to lift a heavy item up and then backed the pickup under it and lowered it into the bed.  Slower doing it alone but safer as I could concentrate on doing one thing at a time and not having to worry if a friend was somewhere they could get hurt.  Today they can show up and help load the lighter stuff; especially as after PT I will probably be pretty tuckered out.

I tell an alligator from a crocodile by the teeth. When the mouth is closed you can still see some teeth on a croc, but not a gator.

Good work guys, everything looks great.

Thomas, I feel ya. I have worked alone for a long time, and have had to get creative when doing some operations. Pinch bars and blocks get it lifted, and pipe rollers get it moved. That worked back home where I had concrete to work on. Now I have sand and gravel. I bought a rough terrain forklift a few years ago, and it was worth it.  Sometimes you just need a set of eye, and cell phone video has helped there. Prop the phone up, crank the engine, review video to see if the coil pack sparked.  That is one of the few things I miss, having a close group of guys to call up for help.

I'll be honest, I only see minor differences in alligators and crocodiles. Both are equally intimidating to me. I'd rather see them later or after while.

Well at the cost of some time working on it I gave it a minor adjustment on the head base and did a test fire. It works for me. Haven't seen an issue yet but I see a potential issue. The upper jaw collapsing on the lower if the heat got high enough. So I might brace that. Other than that I like it.

Tossed my friction jack in there to hold the shape till I can weld the support.

Looks great Das! Like a gator from the gates of Hell!!

I finally got back to the shed to do some forging today. I'm making a camp oven lid lifter and the handle is my first ever Long horn head. This is where I left off a few weekends ago

1565619098_Splitsmall.jpg.b2992e672495deb6504e0f65c03afe6d.jpg

so today I fired up the JABOD. Here's the pic Frosty asked for last time

I'm bad at remembering to take photos so the next shot was after drawing and tapering the horns and turning back and forge welding the head. I think the weld took but it's not critical in this application.

Then I got REALLY bad at remembering to take photos so here it is all finished

I'm over the moon with how it turned out!! Credit to Darryl (Ausfire) for the inspiration for the design. I got to see him demo this type of long horn head last year when I took my family to the historical village at Herberton where he is curator and blacksmith. I took lots of photos and some video and I was able to refer to them today.

A great afternoon's forging!

Cheers,

Jono.

Alligators have a broad flat snout while a croc is more pointy and round.

Dont matter really though i wont be paying that close attention whilst running in the opposite direction. Like bears, color dont matter what matters is how fast i can get away from it.

haha your dead they can run way faster than you. dont look at colour(color for yankees) if you see a bear look at shape here is a good link for this Bear Identification (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov)  also IMO dont bother with bear spray as the bear is usually upwind and all you do is season our self for it.

if its a  black and it attacks play dead andcurl in a ball covering yourneck if an old grizz climb a tall thick tree

You dont have to be fast, just faster then the other guy.

a smart man ;

"Why you wearing runners?" asks the man with 30lb hiking boots

reply "i wish to let the bear eat you in peace, I'll be down the trail about 5 km and be back to grab your gear later"

Ever played World of Tanks?

I believe a croc’s teeth are still visible when their mouths are closed, while a gator’s teeth are hidden, or at least mostly hidden.

As for my work beneath the oak tree today, almost finished with my flatter from a utility trailer, axle spindle. Punched the hole and smoothed everything out with a flap disk.

Hole went crooked on me, even with the two guide holes I had drilled. Primarily because I punched and drifted the hole and then noticed something on the ends I should have cleaned up first. The hole collapsed and went cockeyed. I got it somewhat straight by drifting it to round and then squashing it, but couldn’t get all of it out. I thought about heating it back up, inserting the drift, and twisting the drift, but  decided against it. It is just a struck tool. A straight eye probably isn’t all that critical.

I saw Jennifer do the same in her video, punch the hole too soon, but she had the skill and experience to straighten it back up.

MJ- I’ve got a printer and am at least somewhat experienced in OnShape. Been starting air soft recently. Did you design the CAD models? If so, congratulations! They look great! I just might try building one myself...

I worked on mounting my anvil today.  Unfortunately there was light rain all day, so I had to cut the day short when I finished it.  I'm pretty happy with it, it's solid and sits flat with no rocking.  Might have been a tad better if my lag bolts didn't keep breaking off in the pre-drilled walnut. Switched to nails and just got it done with what I had.  This setup is temporary.  I'm going to fab a metal stand once I get my shop finished.

yes I designed it myself if you wait till next year I will have one designed that is a better replication of the KV-2 as some of the ratios are incorrect to the actual design and some of the small details but its a school project due in 2 weeks  so oh well

I tried out the new (to me) Drill Doctor on a couple of trashed drill bits, with some success.

I also attempted to replace the switch on my big stand fan, since it’s starting to heat up around here. Unfortunately, I seem to have connected the wrong wires, and I let out all the magic smoke. Oh, bother.

That's how I've always been able to tell the difference. Crocs look toothier than gators when their mouths are closed.
