I Forge Iron

What did you do in the shop today?

Recommended Posts

Software Engineer; my most stringent dress code requirements are those of the factory that I am supporting.  Not polite to not meet the local requirements...

(I'd do my Scott Adams "Bearded Balding Suspender Wearing UNIX engineer" impression but suspenders are a pain going through the Metal detectors every time I return to my cube from the floor...)

When I was working in the oil patch; the requirement seemed to be MUD and Grease!  (and a hard hat...)

Did you ever have any interaction with Team O'Neil Rally school Or Tim O'Neil ?

No, never had the pleasure. I have heard of them.  was back in late 80's early 90's when I was into it..  The high performance parts for SAAB's was a bust.  I had proven results but there just wasn't really anybody willing to pay for something out of the think box..   Most were doing it on a shoe string budget..

I did manage to pull of a rather large buy of gripper diffs with getting the Saab rally team to join in..  We imported 15 I think.. True plate clutch diff..  I still have mine.

And I ended up finishing 1 straight cut hardie which was shown earlier in the thread with heat treatment etc, etc..

After finishing it I decided it wasn't wide enough and to thick  so made another one..  and to better merit..  The first 1 was a down and dirty demo when i asked if anybody wanted to see something made and they said a hardie..

Anyhow here are pictures of both.. At some point I will put out a film on how to forge and steel the hardie as I filmed it..

1st 1 is like 1.875" wide and the second is about 2.25"..

I dropped it in acid to show the steeled cutting edge..

Sfeile, I always thought millwright work was fascinating. We've a couple on staff at the factory where I work; they mostly move machines, but occasionally they'll get to install something new. Given the complex skill set and pitfalls of the job, I think they're underpaid... but then, aren't we all? ^_^

Well, I started fighting the legs,   and for octopus legs(tentacles) with multiple curls, I really need a game plan. They move better in the forge individually. Well after some frustration I saw a business card holder in it and went that with it. Last freaky fair people liked an octopus I used as a card holder so this oughta sell as an good card holder.  To me it's a failure And a success. Learn more for the next And made something useful that I think will sell.

Guessing it will hold at least 45 cards and its easy to pull one from.

Das, good work with the tentacles!  I like how they are bent/twisted and joined to the body.  I would put this project in the win column, no failure here.  What you learned on this one with let you win bigger next time!:)  Keep letting the creativity flow.  The oobala looks interesting and look forward to its completion.

Got a start on the Oobala. Sure, 4 arms. It's only tacked so far because I'm debating wings and may need to adjust the stance to suit the weight.  Still have to figure the fingers out. I know what I want the (upper) hands to look, just not what I'm making them from. Yet!IMG_11092018_231706_10_x_15_Portrait_(10.16_x_15.24_cm).thumb.jpg.14dd58a7adb78c6c411ecda03c7b19e5.jpg
