Caleb Hale
I made my first knife-shaped object today. I only say that because it's just some unhardenable mild steel. It will be pretty useless and was mainly just for practice. I found out my bevel grinding skills are...hmm...severely lacking. Left-handed grinding I did ok... ...but right-handed grinding was a disaster (I had a low spot in the blade and couldn't get it out, just kept looking worse and worse) It all come out pretty centered though It's fairly comfortable in the hand And it cuts very well. JHCC
Not every knife has to slice phone books. Butter knives spring to mind...
Frosty
Not bad for a first, beveling isn't easy is it? It just takes practice and is as good a reason a beginner should buy knife blanks and grind knives while learning blacksmithing basics. No matter how good a blacksmith a guy is s/he has to be a grinder jockey to produce a finished blade. Keep at it Caleb. Frosty The Lucky. Iron Poet
I'd recommend filing, it's what I do and it does prevent major screw ups. It just takes a couple minutes longer than with a grinder
Mark Ling
what I did yesterday. Drilled a ton of holes in my coat hooks, plant hangers, etc.. Then wire wheeled a ton of stuff and clear coated a bunch of stuff. I'm not the kind of person who enjoys doing the same thing or even similar thing over and over, so this wasn't the most enjoyable thing, but was something that needed to be done to get ready for the upcoming fair. Remember how I had said that I had made some leafs out of wrought iron and that I had them sitting in some acid to bring out the grain? well it turned out it wasn't wrought iron. That's all right because I came up with a new technique.... sorta. After coming out of the etch i wire brushed them with the block brush cold, and it gave a really clean finish. almost looks like silver. Mark Ling
Today I heat treated 2 knives while getting pelted by June bugs, mowed the yard, got a hair cut, and made a plant hanger. I'm hoping I can finish the knives by Saturday. Polish the blades tomorrow, glue the handles on Wednesday, shape them Thursday, and then we leave town Friday. this will all be done in the evenings after school. and between that I need to price everything, make a table top display, and pull everything else together for the show. I don't use it very often but it comes very handy when you got to clean many small items. It's ugly and noisy but it works alone. I just put in it some steel chips, bits of soap, a little water and the workpieces - turn it on and do something else. No shop time for me on Monday but I managed to get my hands on some old iron. Today was craft fair day, and it was as bad as it's possible. Tomorrow I only take the mobil shop off the trailer and chop some firewood, 'cause you know, it's fun Bests: Gergely I'm curious, Gergely. What happened at the fair to make it so bad?? No sales, grumpy customers, bad weather, all of the above?
Gergely
Well, for starters bad weather, that caused there were not many visitors. Almost no sales were made, income only covered the fair fee. But that's in the cards, nothing serious. A couple days earlier I talked with the man who ordered the fire place tool set, and he said he'll come and look at it at this fair. By noon on Saturday I received the information he is abroad somewhere and had been for a week... That didn't take me into a good mood. Plus all my tools got so wet I have to clean them all and it takes time while I have to make other things in a hurry. Actually it was a fun day, but you need some level of sense of humor to enjoy it Now off I run to work, 'cause lots to do and time is so short today, again. Bests: Gergely You wouldn't mind posting a couple more pictures of that setup would you? I've been looking at trying to build one using some of the junk I have laying around. Nothing big or fancy but was thinking in the lines of a 5 gallon bucket. Now I have to go back and search for the bucket tumblers I've seen before. JHCC
Not much time in the shop, but did get the rest of the grinding done for the vise stand and sliced the top off a helium tank for a new slack tub.

It's a wide 16" dia tire with rubber-like front and back walls to deaden the noise the tumbler makes. Funnily it's still very loud because of the other moving parts. As for today's shop time: A sheperd's axe variation (or a small war axe if you will ): Four flowers of the 90 pcs commission: Textured and bent flat stock for the same fence: Half done nail hook coat hanger. Now I know I have to make another back plate for it. Bests: Gergely
Daswulf
Since being under the weather I have been watching lots of metal detecting/ relic hunting videos. I just had to forge something tonight. Here is my first design on a hand trowel/ scraper that I plan on trying out. It's rough but should work out. Forged from leaf spring. Gergely
Some agricultural work, bending blades for a machine. Tooling was needed for the job. The 24 pcs of blades bent to shape. Bender jig: Bending fork, the inner stem should have be made of sturdier stock. It's coil spring welded on other tool steel handle, so it held up well though. And a cutter helper for the flower commission. The client cuts out the raw material with hand held plasma cutter. Bests: Gergely
