JW513
I’ve always wanted one from this era. He wants $250 and it’s 80lbs. It looks to be in good shape and I want a smaller anvil for outdoor use. I live in Boston area if that helps.
Benona blacksmith
If I had the extra $250 i would buy it. I've always wanted an anvil with the 5th foot.
ThomasPowers
Offer US$3 a pound and grab it and run! It's in reasonable using shape. It's a good size for small items and an excellent travel anvil for living history demos---especially in that area.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
I don't think I would quibble over US$10 (12 cents a pound) even though I love to haggle. I would have it in hand, if I were near enough to pick it up.
JW513
I’m going to pick it up after work. Now I gotta get my river forge fixed and I’ll be ready for outdoor forging. I was going to buy one of those blue 66lbs anvils foe 115. This is way cooler and better investment.
ThomasPowers
I visited several water powered forges when I was in Germany back in the 1990's; how big is the water wheel or turbine in your river forge?
JW513
About as big as my clumsy fingers while typing on my phone in the truck. I got the anvil. I’m very excited, pics to come in morning. I’m personally impressed with the shape it’s in for its age. I won’t use it too much, but it will be used with love. JW513
Anyone care to guess how old it is?
Frazer
220 years. Taking a wild guess.
ThomasPowers
Mid to later 1700's; also a wild guess.
JW513
Here are pics. I just noticed on right side of anvil with 5th foot facing you, something has been done to it. It looks proportionate so I don’t think there was a horn but it has worked on at some point. Other than that it looks great.
ThomasPowers
Looks like someone dressed it to get a crisper edge in that one location. Definitely not enough depth there for a horn!
JW513
Thanks for all the insight everyone. I’m honored to have this anvil. I’d like to get to a point talent wise, where I could use this for demos like ThomasPowers stated. All part of my long term plan.
Frosty
Don't mistake talent for skill, the former leads to the latter provided you practice. It's not the tool that does it, it's the person holding the hammer. No time like the present to grow skills, hit it. Frosty The Lucky. JW513
George Washington may of been alive when this anvil was made...... I think my great great great great grandkids could be using this. That’s how old it is.
horse
In my opinion any anvil that you like a lot and is in any reasonable price range and you aren’t taking food off the table is a good “ buy”. That anvil is way cool and priced right for sure. Happy to know you have it in your hands. 3.125 per pound great price. Get as much history as you can muster, mostly for conversation sake. Good for you.
