Daswulf
Someone dug this up metal detecting and I'm curious if maybe anyone has seen a top tool like this. Could be a wood splitting maul but looks more like a slitter or type of fuller to me. Any ideas?
anvil
It was sure hit hard. With a working edge like that could be a maul.
Daswulf
Looks like it Anvil. I'm torn on maul or forge tool. I could imagine that shape being used for forging also, so it's a tough call for me.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
I'm thinking a maul/log splitter too, unless it was found at an old blacksmith shop location. What ever it is, someone was using a heavy sledge to hit it with all the mushrooming on the head.
Daswulf
Deffinately heavily hammered on Irondragon. While I'd like to say a blacksmith would keep their tools in better condition, I have seen many abused or well used without repair or cleaning up of mushrooming. No other found tools or anything mentioned.
JHCC
I'm guessing that it was probably for splitting wood. The long point would stick when you swung it like an axe, and then you'd drive it the rest of the way with a sledgehammer.
ThomasPowers
That would be a quite unusual edge shape to work in iron and it saw a LOT of work; so I'll throw in on the wood side too. I've seen a lot of battered/abused smithing tools; perhaps knowing they can always make another one can lead to not worrying as much about them. arftist
It is a cold chisel. Came with a sledge handle. One holds the chisel against the work while another strikes it with a sledge.
anvil
It could be a cold chisel. However the diamond shape and cutting on that point indicate another use. It could be a shop tool designed for a special use unknown by others for ever.
