I Forge Iron

Forge design

Recommended Posts

Hey bros,

This is my first time posting here, and was wondering if anyone had advice for a forge I am working on. I am building a forge bed with a firepot out of an old and abusively rusted salvaged firepit I found on my neighbors curb a few days ago. It is made of 1/16 mild steel I am pretty sure and has a few small rust holes. I was wondering if anyone knew any designs that didn't require a welder. Attached is an image of what will become the forge bed. I am making a firepot out of the same, and will clay it over for good measure.

I thought about that same very thing but the more I looked at it the less confidence I had in it to hold up even lined with clay because of the amount of rust. It had a couple little places rusted through. Here's a link to two posts that would be easy to use that pan for. You didn't mention the fuel you plan on using and since I like charcoal I'll recommend something for charcoal https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/55467-mark-iii-jabod-forge/. And then there's this one more suitable for coal. https://www.iforgeiron.com/index2.html/blueprints/100-series/bp0133-the-55-forge-r183/

Welcome aboard,  Good luck, be safe, and remember it's supposed to be fun.

I am using coal (I already have a forge, but I found this and thought it would probably work better, current forge sorta runs but doesn't work that great and is makes clinker like no tomorrow). Thank you for the advice, this is really helpful. I think I will make a side blast, and clay over the bottom (I had an idea of what I was going to do, but just wanted advice of those more knowledgeable than I) with cat litter.

Thank you for the advice!
