SilentForge
it looks like a modified mouse hole, but it will help a lot to know where in the word you are located. have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST It looks like the smith that was using it specifically redid the horn for what was best for him. I'm certain people that know more will be able to tell you more soon
ThomasPowers
Yes the horn is an owner retrofit so showing multiple pictures of it doesn't help identify the anvil at all. Where are those numbers stamped? On the side at the waist they would be part of a CWT weight stamp X 3 25 would be 3x28=84 + 25 so 109 pounds plus X times 112, the general weight of the anvil will indicate what X was. Now the retrofit throws everything off; but probably not 112 pounds worth! England had over 200 anvil manufacturers; many of them making anvils very similar to other makers anvils as they learned the craft in another anvil maker's factory before going off and opening their own factory. Without more stamped info you may NEVER be able to say exactly who made it. BTW is the arrow the broad arrow indicating that it was once property of the British Governement? Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Welcome aboard... if the ring and rebound are good that anvil should serve you well. Hope you have read about not doing any grinding, milling or welding on the hardened face. If I recall the downward facing broad arrow indicated that it had been taken out of service by the Govt. and sold.
pocketcop
thanks all. I live UK. The horn Mod was me welding a piece on the end of it as it was broken off and missing when i bought it. It was the only thing I could do with my limited talents at the time. The Marking are on the side on the waist.
