Justin Topp
They have some flaws that make them far from perfect but they are cool so I want them anyways. I’ll post em soon
CrazyGoatLady
I just went and watched Daniel Moss make some. Interesting build. Thanks for introducing me to something I didn't know existed
Chris C
It's a very interesting tong, isn't it, CGL? I can see a lot of uses for it with flat bar. But you have to be real careful because if the jaws aren't EXACTLY parallel, the flat bar will twist from side to side.
Goods
Simple four bar link. If you do a good job of keeping the opposing sides the same length, with the jaws themselves parallel, they’ll be parallel at any width they can reach. Great tool, look forward to seeing yours. Justin Topp
They work! Parallel at every thickness up to its max of 5/8”. Not comfortable at that size but functional. Wrought iron was used for the whole thing. Haven’t decided if I’m gonna etch it. I think I’m gonna but I don’t know how yet.
jlpservicesinc
Nice work.. I usually find i need to make my wrought iron tongs heavier by nearly a factor of 2 if I want them to live.
Justin Topp
These are mostly decorative so they are pretty thin but yea I would’ve made them thicker if they were heavy use tongs
Justin Topp
Done. Happy with them overall definitely has flaws though.
Justin Topp
Reigns are mostly done. Just clean them up. Even them up ect.
Chelonian
Those tongs all look really good! What size was the starting stock for them?
Justin Topp
Thanks! 1 by 3/8 inch flat bar. About 6 and a half inches for each reign

Goods
Out of curiosity, are these for personal use or are you setting up a business? From the pic they look like sellable items. Very impressed with your progression, David
Justin Topp
I’m setting up to start selling a few tools now and then to help pay for some new gear. So most of these will be sold. If they don’t all sell they might become mine although I’ve had interest. I have no use for 8 pairs of the exact same tongs haha. thanks!
Frosty
Nice job all round Justin, those are 8 well matched tongs. I usually "grade(?)" making matched items as a greater skill than making a good product. You got me beat there. The Dolphin nose tongs are very cool, another really nice job of work. What you call them, Flippers? Ark, ark, wheeet? Frosty The Lucky.

CrazyGoatLady
Couldn't log on for a few days so I couldn't comment. Those dolphin jaw tongs came out real good. As well as your other tongs. You're so good at such a young age. Imagine how good you'll be in a few years!
Justin Topp
I was able to briefly get on long enough to post. I was having some troubles too. But thank you very much!
Justin Topp
Working on a Viking cross peen hammer. Got the wrought iron squared up today. I’m aiming for about a 1.75- 2 pound hammer. Wrought iron is from a wagon wheel. The block weighs about 1.75 lbs as is
Chris C
Cool! Are you going to "steel" the face and the peen?
jlpservicesinc
Your going to want to be in the 2lbs range before you weld the faces on to get to the 2.0lbs range if using 1/4" steel.. This will allow for loses in welding and for dressing out..
Justin Topp
Yup. It will get steel faces. Just like that one I did a long time ago just bigger. I took the handle off and haven’t replaced it yet. I was planning on fairly thick faces. Closer to 1/2”. I wouldn’t mind if it’s a little on the smaller side too. Justin Topp
Added a thick steel face to get the weight up. Came out at 2 lbs. I’ll be etching tomorrow pattern test of a off cut included

Justin Topp
Thanks! It’s very soft. also I’ve got some tongs planned and if anyone has experience with the material I’d love to hear any advise. It’s grade 5 titanium. 2 12” bars of 3/4” round. All I know is it’s a bit more than half the weight of steel. It comes up to a yellow temp from cold in about 25 seconds when I tried and it’s soft as butter but once it’s about an orange color it’s suddenly very hard and needs to be reheated. That’s what I’ve concluded from a bit of testing. Lovely stuff though
