Glenn
The jaws on a bench vise are parallel. The jaws on a post or leg vises are not parallel or in full contact with the object being griped. There is always an angle from the pivot point connecting the mobile jaw to the stationary jaw. This angle increases as the jaw is opened. Is this an issue and when does it cause problems? Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
It hasn't been an issue with me. However I rarely use stock over an inch with the vise and use spacers to help the jaws stay aligned when clamping on the outer edges. ThomasPowers
Generally the vise jaws are angled and reach true parallel at some point on their arc---unless they have been re-worked or worn out. The question to me is: are they parallel at the spacing that agrees with most of your work? I have seen a number of vises where folks noticed that they didn't close with the jaws totally in contact and so reworked them not understanding that this was a FEATURE and not a BUG. Jasent
Rarely bothers me. I too use spacers when using one side of the vice
