Irondragon Forge ClayWorks Posted December 26, 2019 Share Posted December 26, 2019 We have wanted to add on to the Smithy for a long time. This summer we decided to go ahead and build the addition. We are using a highly recommended contractor who does smaller jobs because I'm not up to doing all the work myself and definitely no ladder work. The addition is 12X14 feet to add 168 sq feet to the shop. I thought about digging the footings myself by hand & shovel, then a good thing I didn't. The excavator did it in about an hour, where it would have taken me a week to do. A good thing we had him do it because several large slabs of limestone came out of the hole that I would have had to use a sledge hammer to break it up. Forms built and footings poured. That half wall will come out when the addition is finished and a garage door on the left by the existing door. After the concrete has cured and the forms come off, I get to use the new tractor to back fill and raise the ground around the outside. Then on New Years day the 1st added 3 buckets of crushed limestone for the floor. Kinda cold out. A lot of shovel and rake work. Today got the end walls framed up. ThomasPowers Posted January 3, 2020 Share Posted January 3, 2020 We generally have a lot more elbow room here in the states and so often allow much more junk to accumulate. I'm working on putting a carport addition on my 20'x60' shop and hope to move the big old RR forge out under it to leave room for a powerhammer near the forge that gets used a lot. Theft is a concern out here so anything left "out" needs to be too heavy to move. When I lived in the inner city of Columbus Ohio I used to have to haul my portable equipment up from the basement, through the kitchen and out the back door when I wanted to forge. Climbing rickety wooden stairs carrying a 91 pound anvil was an experience...OTOH my detached garage "shop" there was broken into and nothing in it was small enough for them to steal! Got the side wall studded in and roof rafters up, all roof decking installed & tar papered, with the exception of one sheet, ran out of daylight. Should be back at it Monday. Hans Richter Posted January 4, 2020 Share Posted January 4, 2020 IDF & C, that looks slick, to prevent any annoying leaks between the two roof connections, I had the connections between the existing roof and the new roof of our extension done by a roofer. The plan is to pull up a layer of shingles on the edge of the old roof and lay a continues layer of new shingles over on to the new one. Then flashing for the front over hang. Should be good to go. The roof decking is finished and fully tar-papered just need to do the shingles & drip rails to finish the roof, but it's "in the dry" now. The cedar fascia boards are up and all blocking of the rafters done. All the siding (except for 2 small pieces in front) are done. Waiting on the garage door co. to show up. Les L Posted January 6, 2020 Share Posted January 6, 2020 IF&C, it’s looking good. I know you can’t wait to start working in it. I will start an expansion on my shop in April, after I don’t have to leave every morning at 4:30 to go to work, and move my outdoor kitchen into the new area. I didn’t know how much of a mess I could make until I fired the coal forge up for the first time. I currently have to spend about 30 minutes setting everything up, then move everything again, after the forge cools down when I’m through, so I’m basically only getting a few hours a month to work. The roof is all shingled and should be weather proof (supposed to rain cats & dogs Friday & Saturday, forecast is for up to 5 inches). Good news though is that I'm gettin' a brand new roof on the house tomorrow. Been saving my pennies for a couple of years for that upgrade. Hope we don't get your rain here in Central, OK.
