JHCC Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 "Blacksmith and Essential Skills" was one of five units in the "Literacy and Essential Skills in Industrial Arts" (LESIA) project of Literacy Ontario Central South (LOCS) in 2010. The course materials are an interesting resource for both students and teachers of smithing, although they appear to be more of a course outline than a practical "how-to". Much of the Facilitator's Guide and Notes is focused on the literacy aspects of the program rather than on smithing per se. The following links and descriptions are from the Copain Library hosted by the le Centre de Documentation sur l’Éducation des Adultes et la Condition Féminine (CDÉACF) in Canada. Facilitator's Guide: http://en.copian.ca/library//learning/locs/blacksmith/blacksmith_fac_guide/blacksmith_fac_guide.pdf Quote The Literacy and Essential Skills in Industrial Arts (LESIA) project saw the creation of five industrial arts-based courses that also address workplace Essential Skills instruction and literacy issues. The goal was to make the courses low-pressure and enjoyable while at the same time making them relevant to low-skilled employees or adults wanting to enter the workforce. This facilitator’s guide for the blacksmith course offers an introduction to essential skills; an explanation of the course structure; and notes for the host organization, the stained glass instructor and the essential skills facilitator. Other courses developed through the LESIA project deal with stained glass art, jewellery making, welding art and mosaics.
