Recommend stock size for wrapped eye tomahawk?

I’m looking at trying my hand at making a couple of tomahawks. I’m planning to use A36 with a 5160 bit. I was thinking about using 1/8” x 1” bar stock for the body, but now I’m afraid that may be too thin. 

Anyone have any recommendations?

Too thin.  Use 1/4" thick bar, 1" or wider, depending on the blade size.

For what it's worth, 1/8"x1" is called flat stock

1/8 stock is much too thin.  You will always lose some thickness to scale and to forge welding. 1/4 or 3/8 would be better

1/4"X1"  is about right for wrapped eye.  From there you can change the eye into different models.  this hawk is made from 1/4" X 1 and you can see the difference in the pole and in the blade edge shape. 

The 2nd photo shows a straight wrapped eye and then a longer pole type as well.

I've been using 1.5" x 1/4" x 10.5 long mild steel and forge welding in a piece of 5160 for the bit. It works for me.

Thanks, that’s almost exactly the same size that worked out for me. I tried about 2” longer for two hawks, but the proportions came out all wrong.

I generally use 1 1/4" x 1/4" x 12" 1018 for most of my hawks.

1" was traditional for a lot of trading hawks..  I like 1.25 to 1.5" depending on what I want to do with the wrap.
