I Forge Iron

A space of my own

Recommended Posts

this summer im going all in on a permanent set up for my forge. Here's my laundry list of things im gonna do:

-Build a wall in the gap from that large old door.

-rip out the 8" chimney and replace with a 10-12" one.

-mount my anvil stand to the floor.

-pour concrete underlayment on the floor to provide some fire retardance for the eventuality that i will drop hot metal.

-install new outlets and a light.

‐build a mounted box bellows because forge blowers are expensive.

-build a solid workbench in the back right corner you cant see in the picture.

-build a side draft hood for aforementioned forge.

This is what ive come up with so far, any suggestions?

P.S. The space is about 15'x15'

Solid fuel forge?  My shop doesn't have any windows but when  running a propane forge in it I open both 10'x10' roll up doors and have open gables and 10' tall side walls.  I do not have any CO issues. (The shop is also oriented along the main axis of wind in our area.)

My only suggestion would be for a permanent setup, mount both your anvil and post vice into the ground, not a surface mount. And make sure you have 360 degrees around your post vice.

I turn nearly all my scrolls using my post vice, bending forks and scrolling wrenches. Even a medium sized scroll can use 10' + of parent stock and full access to your vice is a real benefit. And with my post vice mounted 3+' into the ground, Its firm! If you might be scrolling say 1/2"x2", a surface mount wont cut it.
