Fortnight
Hey all, I built my first ribbon burner forge about a month ago. To get it lit, I have to mess with it for a long time. The gas lights up fine, but then I turn on the fan on low and it revs up, and then about the time it gets to top speed it “pops” and goes out. The flames turn into cones, then they get smaller, then it pops off. It doesn’t sound like a backfire or a gun going off. It’s just a loud poor kind of sound. Occasionally the flame is a lighter blue than I am accustomed to. Some of the time it will go for a while and then pop off the same way. The mix looks good, and I have a rough baffle to lower the amount of air going in. Any ideas?
Mikey98118
Do you have a choke on the fan's intake, are a speed regulator on its motor? Do you have a pressure regulator on the gas flow? Do you have anything in place to regulate the fuel gas to air mixture?
Buzzkill
Have you tried changing the amount of gas going in at the same time? Are you using propane or natural gas? How is the gas regulated? Do you have a valve for controlling the air flow or just the fan speed? How did you determine the mix looks good? Does the ribbon burner act significantly different outside the forge than it does in the forge? My knee-jerk reaction is you have too much air/not enough fuel once your fan gets up to speed, but there could be other things going on as well. D.Rotblatt
Ditto Mikey's post....assuming you have the gas regulated (at least with a ball valve). Is it in the forge, or are you running it in open air? If in open air, it may not be able to hold the flame. Mine worked poorly outside the forge, but inside, with some back pressure, it works perfectly.
