mattdcknsn
Hello, just starting to look into blacksmithing. I don't have a forge or an anvil yet but I do have a small sledge hammer that will work for now. I have already learned a lot from this board, and am taking it VERY slow. Will start by building a dirt forge first to figure out somethings and then look at going from there. Thanks to everybody here its a lot of info to process. ThomasPowers
There are several blacksmithing groups in the Virginia area; an afternoon spent at a forge with someone who knows what they are doing can save you 6 months or more of trying to learn this from the internet... mattdcknsn
There is a makersmith around me that does a blacksmith class monthly. Signing up for that in March, next slot available.

All you need now is a box and some dirt. Wood or wooden pallets will do for fuel, and Virginia is a coal rich area. A small dose of confidence that you can put it together and make it work will get you the first fire. After that your confidence will build and off you go. Contact a blacksmithing group near you such as Tidewater Blacksmith Guild, Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland, Blacksmith Guild of Virginia, Central Virginia Blacksmiths Guild, or others and go to the meetings. They have the information and tool you will need. Take a notebook and several pencils to write down what you think is important so you remember when you get back home.
