Cornishdave
So I’m new to the forging scene got enrything up and running but seem to have a lot of heat in the burner tube with the flare end (in the forge) glowing red hot. its getting hot enough that even the mig nozzle is to hot to touch. Any advice welcomed thanks in advance dave
ThomasPowers
Is it burning inside the mixing tube? If so that's very wrong! So make the needed change and try again...kind of hard to do without the details right?
Cornishdave
Doesn’t appear to be burning in the tube, have a very good light blue cone right at the tip of the flare in to the forge? What details would you need??
Steve Sells
what burner do you have? what pressure are you running? you didnt even state what fuel your using or how it is supplied or even how it gets air, the world is a big place, not all of us have the same set up
Buzzkill
A couple pics could help tremendously. One showing the flame at the end of the burner tube/flare in the forge before it's up to temperature is helpful. One at the air inlet which shows the mig tip could also be helfpul (again while the burner is lit).
Cornishdave
Ok I’ll fire it up tomorrow try to get the pictures. It’s running propane at about 16psi
JHCC
Welcome to IFI! If you haven't yet, please READ THIS FIRST!!! Odd looking burner. Where did it come from?
Buzzkill
Yeah, that looks like a flame spreader on the end of the burner rather than what we normally think of as a flare. I would expect that the entire spreader part would get glowing hot in use and the heat may travel back up the mixing tube. I've never seen a burner like that used in a forge before, so I have no idea as to how effective it will be.
ThomasPowers
I think that weird flared thing is supposed to be some sort of inducer and the "flare" they are talking about is the short piece of pipe over the mixing tube end, If so then if the "flare" is stuck too deep into the forge it will get heated up---just like if you stick a piece of metal into the forge. However it's an uphill battle when people won't give enough information.
John in Oly, WA
I found some pics on ebay of the same type of burner. Complete with choke.
JHCC
And asking £39 (about $70 USD), too. Yowza. 53 minutes ago, ThomasPowers said: I think that weird flared thing is supposed to be some sort of inducer and the "flare" they are talking about is the short piece of pipe over the mixing tube end This appears to be the case. The "weird flared thing" appears to have some kind of socket inside it where the burner assembly can be inserted and held (perhaps at an adjustable depth?) with a thumbscrew. It looks like the MIG tip would be just outside of where the flared section connects to the mixing tube.

My problem I think was caused by the burner to deep in the forge with not enough gas pressure pushing. I’ve had it running again earlier and with a bit of tickling here and there the burner tube appears cooler. Planning some more practice running tomorow
JHCC
Just make sure that the end of the flare isn't projecting into the forge chamber; that is, that it's protected from overheating by the refractory/insulation liner.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
We still don't know where in the world you are located. Did you read the thread JHCC linked? 16psi propane is quite a high pressure with the burners I'm familiar with.
